Milwaukee-Style Old Fashioned

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces brandy
  • 1/2 ounce Simple Syrup, recipe follows
  • Maraschino cherries, for garnish, plus 1 teaspoon cherry juice
  • 4 dashes orange bitters
  • 3 dashes regular bitters, such as Angostura
  • Lemon-lime soda, to top
  • Orange slices, for garnish
  • 1 cup sugar

Instructions

  1. Special equipment: a mason jar
  2. Fill an old-fashioned glass with ice. In a mason jar, combine the brandy, Simple Syrup, cherry juice, orange bitters and regular bitters. Shake very well to combine. Pour into the prepared glass and top with a splash of soda. Garnish with cherries and orange slices.
  3. Bring the sugar and 1 cup water to a simmer in a small saucepan; cook until the sugar is dissolved. Let cool. Refrigerate for up to 2 weeks.
